全訳
窓から何が起きているかを知ることはできなかったので、妹は一階に下りて外に出た。ちょうどそのとき、家の壁の間から見える空は薄明のピンク色をしていた。走ったり馬車で駆けたりしている人がますます多くなってきた。「黒い煙だ！」と誰かが叫んでいるのが妹には聞こえた。また「黒い煙だ！」と。みなが同じ心理状態にある中、そうした恐怖が伝染するのは避けられなかった。妹が階段のところでぐずぐずしていると、また新聞売りが近づいてきた。妹はすぐに買った。新聞売りは残りを持って走り去り、行く先々で1部1シリングの新聞を売っていた。ー商魂と混乱が入り乱れていたのは奇妙なことである。
