There is no safety from the Black Smoke but in instant flight.”
That was all, but it was enough. The whole population of the great six-million city was stirring*, slipping*, running; presently it would be pouring en masse northward.
“Black Smoke!” the voices cried. “Fire!”

全訳
この新聞を読んで、妹は最高司令官の緊急声明で言及された破滅的な出来事を知った。「火星軍はロケットを用いて、膨大な量の黒い毒ガスの雲を放出できる。彼らは我々の砲兵中隊を窒息死させ、リッチモンド・キングストン・ウィンブルドンを壊滅させた。さらに、道中のあらゆるものを破壊しながらロンドンにゆっくり進撃している。止めることは不可能だ。その黒ガスから助かるにはすぐに逃げるしかない。」
声明はこれだけだったが、十分だった。巨大な600万都市の全住民は目を覚まし、あわてふためいて、逃げていた。まもなく、彼らは塊になって北方へ押し寄せていった。「黒ガスだ！」と誰かが叫んだ。「火災だ！」
