全訳

ロンドンでも、土曜の夜は雷が鳴り、嵐が吹き荒れていた。だから妹は馬車タクシーに乗ってウォータールー駅まで行った。妹は、深夜鉄道がいつも出発するプラットフォームでしばらく待っていたところ、なんらかの故障のせいでその夜はウォーキングに向かえないということを知った。でも妹はその本質はわかっていなかった。実際、このとき鉄道当局でさえはっきりと理解していなかったのだ。駅は興奮状態とは程遠かった。そのとき駅員たちは、バイフリートとウォーキング・ジャンクションの間で何か故障が起こったということしか気づけていなかった。彼らは劇場の観客を乗せて鉄道を走らせていた。その鉄道は、ふだんならウォーキングを通過し、バージニア・ウォーターやギルドフォード方面へと向かうものである。そして駅員らは、その故障のせいで、サウサンプトンやポーツマスに向かう日曜リーグ観戦列車のルートを変えねばならず、必要な手配をするのに忙しかった。ある夕刊の記者は、少し似てる雰囲気があったからといって妹を運輸部長と間違えて、呼び止めてインタビューしようとした。鉄道関係者を除いては、火星人とその故障を結びつける人はほとんどいなかった。
