全訳

さらに、自分は安全だという固定観念がロンドン市民に深く根づいており、びっくりするような情報が新聞に載っていることも日常茶飯事だったので、ロンドン市民は火星人の報道を震えながら読むことはなかっただろう。「昨夜７時頃、火星人が円筒宇宙船から出てきた。彼らは金属装甲のロボットで暴れ回り、ウォーキング駅と付近の家を完全に破壊し、カーディガン連隊の一個大隊を全滅させた。詳細は明らかになっていない。マキシム機関銃はその装甲にはまったく効かなかった。野戦砲も破壊された。騎兵隊がチャーツィーにギャロップで急行したということだったから、火星人はどうやらゆっくりとチャーツィーやウィンザー方面に向かっているようだ。ウェスト・サリーを大きな不安が覆っている。ロンドン方面への侵攻を食い止めるために防塁が急造されている。」こんな風にサンデー・サン紙が書いていた。明らかに即席だった「ハンドブック」的なうまい記事がレフェリー紙に載っていたが、そこではこのことを、動物園の動物が村に突然解き放たれたようなものだとなぞらえていた。
