このロンドン編（第14章）ではいっぱいイギリス常識が必要で大変だけど、Never give up!
「Foundling Hospital」（ファウンドリング・ホスピタル）は、ひとことで言えば、児童養護施設よ。「foundling」は「捨て子」という意味ね。ただ「hospital」は、「病院」じゃないわ。hospitality(もてなし)の方の「hospital」よ。
貧しかったりして子どもを育てられない母親が、子を引き取ってもらう施設なの。

このしせつが建てられたのは、いわゆる「ジョージ王朝」（ジョージ１世～４世の統治期間）にあたる18世紀半ばごろ（1741）で、産業革命がはじまっていこうとする時代です。人々の生活がおおきく変わってきて、都市部で社会的弱者が増えてきました。そして、公的に福祉にかかわっていこうとする動きも、一部の良識ある貴族の中には出始めていた時期です。
1898年のOS社の地図からも、そうしたイギリス福祉政策の影響をうかがうことができるわ。
Workhouse（救貧院）やLunatic Asylum（精神病院）が、兵営と同じくらい目立つように（黒く塗りつぶし）描かれているし、兵営と同じくらい多く建てられているの。
Workhouse（救貧院）は、職業支援所です。失業者をここで働かせるんです。
Lunatic Asylum（精神病院）はその名の通り、精神障害者を治療するところです。
これらのしせつはだいたいジョージ王朝時代に本格的なものが建ちはじめて、ヴィクトリア朝時代に全国にきゅうそくにひろまっていきました。
もちろん、ジョージ王朝時代の救貧院・精神病院は21世紀の感覚からすると到底許容できない「非人道的」なものだったわ。たとえば、以下の写真は、ブリストル付近の精神病院を描いた絵ね。治療というよりは「収容」施設だったし。
それでも、こうして「福祉」への一歩が踏み出されたことには大きな意義がありました。
ともあれ、OS地図（1894-96）にもFoundling Hospitalが描かれています。
児童養護施設ですから、教会や学校が併設されていることがわかりますね。
あと、今日は日曜日ですから、わたしは教会に行ったわけです。

全訳
妹は朝、ファウンドリング・ホスピタルの教会へ行った。でもまだ昨夜起こったことは知らなかった。教会で聖職者たちは、どうやら火星人が攻めてきてるらしいというようなことを言って、特別に平和を願って祈っていた。教会を出て、妹はレフェリー紙を買った。そこに書かれていたニュースを見て不安になり、またウォータールー駅に行って電信が回復しているか確かめようとした。乗合馬車、四輪馬車、自転車、そしてとっておきの服を着た数えきれない歩行者たちは、新聞売りがばらまいている奇妙な情報に影響を受けていないようだった。ただ興味を示しただけで、不安になったとしても、地元の住民がどうなるか心配になっただけだった。妹はウォータールー駅に着いてはじめて、ウィンザーとチャーツィー線が寸断されたことを聞いた。ポーターが妹に言ったところによると、今朝、数本のびっくりするような電報がバイフリートやチャーツィー駅から届いたが、不意に電報が送られてこなくなったということだ。妹は正確な詳細を知ることはほとんどできなかった。得られた情報は「ウェイブリッジ周辺で戦闘が起こっている」ということくらいだった。
