さて、第15章だ。私とアンドリューシャ（教区牧師）が中心となる段落だ。時間は第14章から少しさかのぼり、日曜の夕方といったところだな。

最初の方の段落ではこのあたりの時間で起きたことの振り返りだったり、裏事情が語られたりするので、私たちからはあまり言うまい。

火星人が攻勢を再開したのは、ハリフォード付近の開けた牧草地の生垣の下で、アンドリューシャちゃんが座りながら熱く話してきたころのことであった。そのとき妹は、避難民がウェストミンスター・ブリッジに流れ込んでくるのを見ていた。今まで提示されてきた様々な説明から確かめられる限りでは、火星人の大多数は夜9時までずっとホーセル共有地の基地で準備に忙しかったようだ。彼らは緑の煙を大量に出しながら、急いで作戦に取り掛かっていた。
