Towards Sunbury was a dark appearance, as though a conical* hill had suddenly come into being there, hiding our view of the farther country; and then, remoter across the river, over Walton, we saw another such summit. These hill-like forms grew lower and broader even as we stared.

全訳
毎秒、隠れた砲兵隊からの射撃が火星人に命中しないかと期待していたが、夕暮れの静謐は破られなかった。火星人は遠ざかっていくにつれ姿が小さくなっていった。やがて、霧と夜が集まるように火星人を飲み込んでしまった。同じ衝動に駆られて、より高くまで生垣によじ登った。サンベリーの方には黒いものが見えた。あたかも円錐状の丘が突然そこに出現し、その向こうの土地の景色を覆い隠しているようだった。そして、川の対岸の先、ウォルトンの向こうに、同じようなもののてっぺんが見えた。このような丘のような形のものは、見て変化がわかるほど、徐々に低く広がっていくようだった。
「even as we stared」は「見て変化がわかるほど」でいいかな。
