全訳
突然予感がして、北の方を見た。そこに1/3っくらいの大きさの山のような黒い雲が昇っていた。すべてが突然とても静かになった。南東から遠く離れたところで、その静寂を破って、火星人がお互いにホーホーと呼びかけているのが聞こえた。そして、火星人の遠い砲撃音で空気が震えた。でも、地球側の砲兵はまったく反撃していなかった。
