問題編
最初から2単語目の「three」は「3体の火星人のロボット」を指しているからな。
But three certainly came out about eight o’clock and, advancing slowly and cautiously*, made their way through Byfleet and Pyrford towards Ripley and Weybridge, and so came in sight of the expectant* batteries against the setting sun. These Martians did not advance in a body, but in a line, each perhaps a mile and a half from his nearest fellow. They communicated with one another by means of sirenlike howls*, running up and down the scale from one note* to another.

火星軍の戦略
やつらは戦力を集中させるのではなく、広範囲に分散して各個に進撃することを選んだようだな。各機が1マイル半（≒2.4km）離れていたということは、海戦の際の単横陣よりも広いな。（単横陣は横一列に並ぶやつ。単縦陣とか輪形陣はよく見るかもしれないが、これはあんまり見ない気もするな。くわしくは艦これーンの皆さんに聞いてくれ）
火星人にとってイングランドは平地同然。それに補給拠点も存在しないから、これは「陸戦」というよりは「海戦」なのよね。
「紺碧の艦隊」で満蒙決戦の際も、日本側はモンゴルを海に見立てて戦術を立てていたな。
あと、通信が「sirenlike howl」というのは興味深い。無線の概念がまだないころだ。Wellsにとっては、動物の声が原始的だが遠くまで届く通信手段だったから選んだのだろうな。

だが、8時ごろ3体のロボットは確実に出陣しており、ゆっくりと慎重に進みながら、バイフリート、パーフォードをリプリーとウェイブリッジに向けて進んでいた。そして沈みゆく夕日を背景に、彼らの姿は待機している砲兵に発見されるところとなった。これらのロボットはかたまって侵攻していたのではなく、一列になって、しかもお互いが1.5マイル離れていた。火星人らは互いの通信にサイレンのような遠ぼえを使っていた。音階を上げ下げすることでメッセージを伝えていたよう。。
