全訳
で、人間がスズメバチの巣をいぶすように整然と攻撃を加えながら、火星人はこの奇妙な致死性のガスをロンドンの方の地域にまき散らしていった。火星軍の両翼はゆっくりと離れていき、とうとうハンウェル～クーム、マルデン間の線上に並んだ。一晩中、ガス発射管を背負って破壊しながら進んでいった。セント・ジョージ・ヒルで一体が撃破されて以降は、砲兵はただの一度たりとも、火星人を撃破するチャンスを得られなかった。隠された大砲が待ち構えている可能性があるところを見つけるたびに、彼らは黒いガスを出す新たなキャニスター弾を放った。そして、大っぴらに大砲が配備されているところには、レーザー光線が放たれた。
「The horns of the crescent」は、火星軍の戦列の両翼のことだ。火星人は数キロにわたって鶴翼の陣のような陣形を組んで進撃していたんだったな。「cresent」の表現は面白い。
