全訳
深夜12時には、リッチモンド・パークの坂周辺の林は炎を上げ、キングストン・ヒルも赤々と照っていた。そうした炎は、入り組んで広がる黒いガスに映っていた。こうしたガスはテムズ川流域じゅうにインクがにじんだように、眼に見える限り広がっていた。それをかき分けるように、2体の火星人がゆっくりと進み、あちこちにシューシューと音を立てながらガスをまき散らしていた。
