全訳
以下のような光景も思い浮かぶだろう。（着弾によって）突然注意が移る。急速に広がる渦が黒く膨らみながら猛スピードで天に登り、薄明りをまったくの暗闇に変えてしまう。そのガスは奇妙で恐ろしい敵となって犠牲者に迫りくる。近くの人と馬は見えなくなる。走る。悲鳴を上げる。すっころげる。狼狽の声がする。大砲は突然放棄される。人々は窒息し地面にのたうち回る。円錐状の不透明な煙が急速に広がっていく。そして、誰もいなくなった夜ーどす黒いガスのかたまりが静かに、死んだ者たちを隠しているだけとなる。
臨場感を出すためか、文章ではなく名詞・分詞構文をつなげている形だな。
とりあえず、和訳では現在時制にしてみたが。
