全訳

アッパー・ハリフォードでわたしたちが聞いたのは、リプリーとセント・ジョージ・ヒルからの火星人の遠ぼえと、イギリス軍の砲撃音だった。リプリーにいた砲兵たちは、本来ならそうした場所に配置されるはずのない未熟な志願砲兵だったので、つい早まって、雑な一斉射撃をしてしまった。もちろん効果はなく、馬に乗ったり単に走ったりして、無人の村を急いで逃げていった。一方、火星人はわざわざレーザー砲を使うこともなく、大砲を平然とまたいでゆき、慎重に大砲の間を踏み分けながら、通り過ぎて行った。しかし、火星人にとって予想外なことにペインシル・パークで大砲と出くわしてしまった。破壊したのだけれども。
