ということで、ちょうど月曜日の夜明けごろ、どのように世界一の都市が恐怖の波に襲われたかは理解してくれたと思う。大急ぎで避難する人々の波はすぐに激流と化し、泡を立てる波のように駅の周りに襲い掛かり、恐ろしい戦場になるくらいテムズ川の渡し舟に押し寄せ、北と東に延びるあらゆる水路を走って行った。午前10時には警察組織が、12時には鉄道組織までもが統率を失い、機構と能率はなくなり、溶け、ゆがみ、あっという間に社会全体が液体になっていった。
