By midday a Martian had been seen at Barnes, and a cloud of slowly sinking black vapour drove along the Thames and across the flats of Lambeth, cutting off all escape over the bridges in its sluggish advance. Another bank drove over Ealing, and surrounded a little island of survivors on Castle Hill, alive, but unable to escape.

1. オレンジのandが繋いでいるものは、away from…とalong…。これらは、drove the people…away from…and along…と繋がるのかな。
2. 紫のbankは「土手」じゃないですね。土手は「surround」しません。「積み重なったもの」ということで、黒い毒ガスのことでしょう。

そして、太陽が高く昇り、蒸気船の操舵手と機関員がロンドンに戻ることを拒んだころには、逃げ出さねばならないという緊張感は今までにないほどの規模でロンドンの人々を突き動かし、駅から逃げて北に延びる道へと向かわせていた。昼12時ごろには、火星人がバーンズで見られた。ゆっくりと沈みゆく黒いガスはテムズ川に沿って、ランベスの平地へとのび、のろのろと進みながら橋の上の景色を隠していった。イーリングの方でもガスが見られ、生存者が逃げ込んだキャッスル・ヒルを小さな小島のように囲んでいた。彼らは死にはしなかったが、脱出もできなかった。
