The front tire of the machine she got was punctured in dragging it through the window, but she got up and off, notwithstanding*, with no further injury than a cut wrist*. The steep foot of Haverstock Hill was impassable owing to several overturned horses, and my sister struck into Belsize Road.

全訳

妹はチョーク・ファーム駅でノース・ウェスタン鉄道に乗ろうとした。駅では、積み降ろし場で荷物を積んでいる列車の機関車が喚声を上げる人々をかき分けており、十数人のたくましい男が懸命に、群衆が運転手を炉に押し込むのを防いでいた。そんな有様だったので鉄道に乗ることはかなわず、妹はチョーク・ファーム・ロードに出た。妹は疾走する乗り物を避けながら混雑している道を進み、幸いなことに、まだ誰も物色していない自転車店で略奪をはたらくことができた。窓から引きずり出す際に自転車の前輪がパンクしてしまったが、それでも手首を軽く切った程度で済み、自転車をにまたがって出発した。ハーヴァーストック・ヒルの斜面がはじまるところは、いくつものひっくり返った馬車のために通行できず、ベルサイズ・ロードも渋滞していた。
