1. 赤の「a number of」の意味は「いくつかの（何人かの）」（≒several）。「more than a few, but not many」らしいです。ちなみに 「a large number of」となると「たくさんの」となります。a many number ofとは言わないので注意。
2. オレンジの「for」の意味は「～に向かって」。「～へ」という意味を表す前置詞to, toward, forにおいて、toは終点・towardははじめと終わりを結ぶ線・forは始点に注目している印象が強いのは気のせいかな。
3. 青の「a quarter to nine」の意味は「8時45分」。「あと1/4時間で９時」ですからね。なお９時15分は「a quarter past nine」。
８時までには、数名の女の子と無職の人がすでに共有地の方へ、「火星からの死んだ人間」を見に出発していた。それが、記事がとった表現だった。
わたしは新聞配達の少女から最初にそれを聞いた。8 時 45 分ごろ、デイリー・クロニクル紙を取りに外に出たときだった。
当然わたしはびっくりし、即座に外に出て、オターショウの橋を渡ってホーセル共有地の砂地のところに行った。
…21世紀の日本の感覚からすると、９時前に新聞届くのってめっちゃ遅いよね。
