下に「one above another」とあって、ふつうは積み重なってる様子を表すみたいだ。ただ、省略を復元すると「one movement above another movement」となるから、ここはone after anotherみたいに「次々と」という感じの訳でいいと思う。

全訳

みんな、人間が出てくるのを見ることを予期していたはずーひょっとしたら、わたしたち地球人と少しは違っているかもしれないけど、でも本質的には人間のものを。わたしもそう予想していたことは認めるよ。
でも、見てるとまもなく、何かが影の中で動いているのが見えたんだ。ひとつまたひとつと、灰色のうねる動くものが見えた。そして、２つの光る円（目みたいなの）が見えた。
そして、小さい灰色の蛇に似ているもの（杖の太さくらい）が、のたくってる腰回りの部分から出てとぐろを巻いており、空中でくねくねしてわたしの方に向かってきた。
ーそして次々と触手が現れた。
