この段落の真ん中よりちょっと先に出てくる「the shopman」っていうのは、第46話で出てきた人のことだ。円筒の作ったクレーターの中に突き落とされてた、火星人に現状一番近い人。

I half turned, keeping my eyes fixed upon the cylinder still, from which other tentacles* were now projecting*, and began pushing my way back from the edge of the pit. I saw astonishment giving place to horror on the faces of the people about me. I heard inarticulate* exclamations* on all sides. There was a general movement backwards. I saw the shopman* struggling still on the edge of the pit. I found myself alone, and saw the people on the other side of the pit running off, Stephanie among them. 全訳
突然の悪寒がわたしを襲った。後ろの女性から甲高い金切り声が上がった。引き続き円筒（そこからまた新たな触手が出てきていた）から目を離さずに半分だけふりむいた。そして、人混みをかき分けて穴のへりからバックし始めた。まわりの人々の顔の驚きが恐れに変わったのが見えた。不明瞭な絶叫があらゆる方から聞こえた。いろいろな動きが後方で起こっていた。さっきの店員がまだ穴のふちで出ようともがいているのが見えた。気づくとわたしは一人で、穴の反対側の人々は穴から逃げていた。ステファニーさんもその中にいた。わたしは再び円筒を見た。コントロールできない恐怖がわたしをとらえた。わたしはじっと見つめながら、立ちすくんでいた。
思うのですけれども、「shopman」は「shopwoman」とはしないのですね。
この当時の社会情勢ってやつだ。
