まずは第４章までをまとめとく？
了解。
わたしは小説の語り手のウェストリッジ。上のタージルムちゃんはわたしの奥さん。
ここは1900年ごろのイギリス、ロンドンのベッドタウンWoking。
町はずれのホーセル共有地（共有地については第22話参照）に、火星からの宇宙船と思しき円筒(cylinder)が着陸したんだ。
でもそこから現れた火星人は触手属性のキモい姿をしてて、円筒の周りの何百人という群衆はあまりの恐ろしさに散り散りになって逃げだしたってところだな。
わたし（Ogilvina）は天文学者だ。
ミー（Hensley）はロンドンでワークしてるジャーナリスト。
わたし（Stephanie）は王立天文官（＝天文学会の長・グリニッジ天文台長）ですよ。
…えっと、わたしは（Denaris）は隕石学会のトップ。でももう小説の中には出てこないの…。

1. 青のアンダーラインについて、先行詞を関係詞中に戻してあげると「I had had the glimpse of the Martians emerging」となります。「had the glimpse of」は「see」の仲間なので、SVOCの第５文型（っぽいもの）として訳しましょう。
2. オレンジのthemが指しているものは「the Martians」です。
全訳
火星人が火星から地球に来るときに乗ってきた円筒から現れるのを一目見た後、ある種とりつかれて、わたしは動けなくなった。火星人が背後にいる塚を見つめつつ、わたしはヘザーの低木に膝まで沈んで立ち続けた。恐怖心と好奇心が相克していたのだ。
