この段落の時間は「twilight」になってる。
twilightは「黄昏時」とかっこよく訳されるかんじ。日の出前か日没後のほのかに明るい時間帯だ。ここでは日没後だな。

1. 赤アンダーラインの部分は上のように「anything further happened」となります。～thingは後置修飾するということと、happenが自動詞だということに気をつけましょう。

全訳
さらなる進展がある前に、夕日は沈み、薄暗い黄昏どきになった。ウォーキングの方、左側遠くにいる群衆は膨らんでいるようで、その方向からかすかな人の声がそのとき聞こえた。チョブハムの方の小さな集団はバラバラになっていた。穴からの動きの兆候はほとんどなかった。
過去の文で「now」という単語は「そのとき」と訳せばいいかしらね。
