第５章 第６段落
過去イチ意味がわからない段落よ。各単語はわかるんだけど、結局何を言ってるかわかんないってタイプ。
この文章の最初から三番目の単語のthis(it was thisのthis)は、前段落の「There was scarcely an intimation of movement from the pit.」（穴から動きの兆候がなかったこと）を指してるよ！
問題編
It was this, as much as anything, that gave people courage, and I suppose the new arrivals* from Woking also helped to restore* confidence. At any rate*, as the dusk* came on a slow, intermittent* movement upon the sand-pits began, a movement that seemed to gather force as the stillness of the evening about the cylinder remained unbroken. Vertical* black figures in twos and threes* would advance, stop, watch, and advance again, spreading out* as they did so in a thin irregular crescent* that promised* to enclose* the pit in its attenuated* horns. I, too, on my side* began to move towards the pit.

なんだよ「spreading out as they did so in a thin irregular crescent that promised to enclose the pit in its attenuated horns」って。文法をクリアしても、突然の「crescent」とか「attenuated horns」が意味不明なんだが。
…というか「クレセント」に「アテニュエイテッド」とか中二ワードじゃないか。さすがドイツ担当のリッちゃんだ。
…crescentとかattenuatedは比喩表現だから。
sand-pitのところに火星人（上画像赤色）がいて、それを人々が取り囲んでる感じ。
その人々の集団の様子が上から見ると三日月形だったってわけね。（cresent）（上画像黄色）
その先っぽの方はとんがってるから「attenuated horns」（上画像オレンジ色）で、sand-pitを囲もうとしてるってこと。
「わたし」（上画像青色）はsand-pitに近づこうとしてるところだ。

1. it wasとthatを取り外しても意味が通るので、赤アンダーラインの部分はitーthatの強調構文ですね。あとas ～ as any…は最上級を表します(例 She is as smart as any student in my class＝彼女はうちのクラスで誰よりも賢い)ので、as much as anythingは「どんなものよりも」とかと訳してあげるとよいでしょう。
2. オレンジのas句/節が終わるのはonです。come onは自動詞で「(暗闇などが)やってくる」という意味があります。ちょっと難しかったかも。
3. 紫のas句/節が終わるのは文末です。「, a movement that…」は「a slow, intermittent movement」の説明をしているので、SVが入ってはいけません。だから「, a movement 〔that…unbroken〕.」というように最後までthat節のカッコがないといけない。そうなると、as節はSVの数的に文末まで伸びていることになります。stillnessーunbrokenというコロケーションも成立しそうです。
4./5. 茶色のas句/節が終わるのは「so」までです。そしてthey did soは前の「Vertical black figures～advance again」を指します。このasの意味は「～のとき」か「～の間」。黒い人影が進んだりしている間に、散らばってたってことです。このas they did soはat the same timeとも言い換えられると思います。
asってwhenより同時性が強いと言うことも覚えておきましょう。
全訳
人々に勇気を与えたのはなによりもこのことだった。ウォーキングから新しく人が来たことも、自信を取り戻すのに役に立ったのだと思う。それはさておき、夕闇がやってくると、ゆっくりとした断続的な動きが砂地の近くで始まった。円筒の周りで夜の静寂が続いている間に、ますます盛んになっていくような動きだった。まっすぐな黒い人影が三々五々進んだり、止まったり、じっと眺めたり、そしてまた進んだりしていた。同時に、先っぽの方で穴を取り囲むように三日月状に、群衆が広がっていた。わたしも、自分のいたところから穴の方に動き始めた。
