第２段落が短いから、この記事に第３段落も入れたぞ。
第２段落 問題編
In London that night poor Hensley’s telegram* describing the gradual unscrewing* of the shot* was judged to be a canard*, and her evening paper, after wiring* for authentication* from her and receiving no reply—the girl was killed—decided not to print a special edition.

1. 赤のandが繋いでるものは、前後の２文です。どちらも主語と動詞が見づらいですね。後半は挿入が多くて、 her evening paper decided not to print…となっています。
2. オレンジのandが繋いでるものは、wiringとreceivingです。
3. 青のspecial editionは「号外」ですね。まあ、evening paperって書いてますから、夕刊を特別編集にしただけかもしれませんが…。
第３段落 問題編
「supper」と「dinner」はどちらも「夕食」と訳していいんだけど、以下の画像のような違いがあるわ。supperは軽めで、dinnerはちゃんとしたものっていうのが主な違いだけどね。
Even within the five-mile circle the great majority of people was inert*. I have already described the behavior of the girls and women to whom I spoke. All over the district* people were dining* and supping*; working men were gardening after the labours of the day, children were being put to bed, young people were wandering* through the lanes* love-making*, students sat over their books.
inert活発でない district地区 dine≒sup夕食を取る(動詞で使うのは21世紀では古いです) wanderぶらつく lane小道 love-makeイチャイチャする(※これを辞書通り性行為と訳しては流石にまずいですよ！歩きながらできるカップルがいるはずがありませんから。)
1. 赤アンダーラインの部分で文法的に誤っている単語一語を訂正すると？

「lane」は小道だけど、厳密に言えば「生垣にはさまれた小道」だ。まわりから見えにくいからイチャイチャするのに都合がいいな。

(Even within the five-mile circle) the great majority of people were inert*. I have already described the behaviour of the girls and women 〔to whom I spoke〕. (All over the district*) people were dining* and supping*; working men were gardening (after the labours of the day), children were being put to bed, young people were wandering* (through the lanes*) love-making*, students sat (over their books).
1. 赤アンダーラインの部分で文法的に誤っている単語一語を訂正すると、was→wereですね。「the number of～」は単数形ですが、「the majority of～」など割合系はofの後の主語に動詞を合わせます。
2. 青アンダーラインの部分でイギリス英語に直せる単語を直すと、behavior→behaviourです。母音が３つも続くなんて怖いって思いますが慣れましょう。
3. 赤マーカーの部分は、「本の上に座っていた」なんて訳すと変ですね。というかその意味ならsit overじゃなくてsit onのはずです。ここのoverは、chat over coffee(コーヒーを飲みながらしゃべる)と同じ意味（～しながら）だと考えて、「本を読みながら座っていた」としましょう。「本」でもいいですけど学生ですから「教科書」でもいいですかね。
全訳
ロンドンではその夜、徐々に宇宙船のハッチが開いてきていることを述べていた、かわいそうなヘンスリーさんの電報は誤報であると判断された。その新聞社はそれが本当かどうかヘンスリーさんに電報を送って確かめようとしたが、返事がないので（亡くなっていたのだ）、号外を印刷しないことに決めた。
その５マイルの円の域内でも、大多数の人々は活発ではなかった。わたしが話しかけた人たちの振舞いについては今までに既に述べた通りだ。この地域ではみんな夕食を取っていた。労働者はその日の仕事がおわり、庭を手入れしていた。子供たちはベッドに寝かせられていた。若い人は生垣にはさまれた小道でイチャイチャしながら歩いていた。学生は座って勉強していた。
