About three o’clock there began the thud* of a gun at measured intervals* from Chertsey or Addlestone. I learned that the smouldering* pine wood into which the second cylinder had fallen was being shelled*, in the hope of destroying that object before it opened. It was only about five, however, that a field gun* reached Chobham for use against the first body of Martians.

1. 赤アンダーラインの部分だけ(learnedのthat節の内)の主語はthe smouldering pine woodで、動詞はwas being shelled（学校英文法ではまとめて動詞のかたまりとみなしましょう）。
2. 緑のitは、後ろのthatと強調構文を成しています。itとthatの間に副詞句(only about five)が入ったら強調構文ですよね。
3. 青のonlyの意味は「ようやく」。onlyのあとに時間を表す語句が来るとこの意味になります。
全訳
３時ごろに、チャーツィーやアドレストンの方角から、一定間隔で大砲のドーンという音が響き始めた。２番目の宇宙船が落下して煙がくすぶる松林に、それが開く前に破壊できる望みにかけて、砲弾が撃ち込まれていたと知った。しかし、最初の一体に使うために野砲がチョブハムに到着したのは、遅くも５時になってからのことだった。
「there began the thud*…」は there is の変形版だ。
文法的に見れば第一文型倒置MVSだな。
