A sudden whirl* of black smoke driving across the road hid her for a moment. I ran to my neighbour’s door and rapped* to satisfy* myself of what I already knew, that her wife had gone to London with her and had locked up* their house. I went in again, according to my promise, to get my servant’s* box, lugged* it out, clapped* it beside her on the tail of the dog cart, and then caught the reins* and jumped up into the driver’s seat beside my wife. 全訳

騎兵隊員は振り向いて、わたしを見ながら「皿のカバーみたいなやつに乗って出て来たぞ」というようなことを叫び、頂上の家の門へと走って行った。突然黒い煙が道に流れ込んできたので、その姿が少しの間見えなくなった。近所の家に走り、ドアを叩いた。既に知っていたことではあったが、その近所の人が奥さんと一緒にロンドンに行っていて施錠しているということを確かめたかったのだ。再び自宅に入り、約束通り使用人の箱を取ってきて引きずり出し、馬車の後部座席に座っている使用人の隣に放りこんだ。そして手綱を握り馬車に飛び乗り、ターちゃんの横の運転席に座った。次の瞬間煙と音がやみ、わたしたちは急いで発進した。メイベリー・ヒルの坂を越え、オールドウォーキングの方へ駆けていった。
